DFM Guidelines for Outsourced CNC Machining Projects

Design for Manufacturability (DFM) helps designers produce parts that can be smoothly manufactured by CNC workshops. Many R&D teams finish CAD design directly and send files for quotation, ignoring manufacturability constraints. This will cause higher cost, longer lead‑time or even un‑machinable structures. For overseas outsourcing CNC projects, basic DFM checking is very valuable.

Below are practical DFM suggestions for custom CNC‑machined components.

Wall‑thickness suggestion

Too‑thin walls are easy to deform in cutting process. For metal parts, keep wall thickness ≥0.8 mm as much as possible. Our engineers evaluate these geometry constraints for every batch from custom CNC turning and milling work.; for plastic parts, suggest ≥1.5 mm. If ultra‑thin structure is necessary, discuss with our engineer in advance.

Internal corner radius

Sharp internal right‑angle corners cannot be fully achieved by standard milling tools. Reserve reasonable inner corner radius according to tool diameter, which greatly lowers processing difficulty and unit price.

Deep narrow cavities

Deep and narrow grooves increase tool wear and processing time. Avoid overly high depth‑to‑width ratio for cavities. Simplify structure properly if performance allows.

Hole and thread design

Deep small‑diameter holes bring tool‑breaking risk. For tapping threads, keep reasonable hole depth and avoid full‑thread blind holes without escape space.

Tolerance setting principle

Do not mark tight tolerance on every dimension. Only add strict tolerance for key mating sizes. Loose non‑critical dimensions will effectively reduce production cost.

XAP‑CNC provides free DFM review service for every received drawing. Our engineers will point out potential manufacturability risks and give optimized suggestions without extra charge. You only need to send STEP/IGES/DXF files together with your application description.

Good DFM cooperation helps both sides achieve better quality, competitive price and faster delivery for prototypes and batch custom parts.

What is DFM review in CNC outsourcing?

DFM review checks whether your CAD design is suitable for CNC machining and proposes reasonable optimization advice.

Is your DFM checking service chargeable?

DFM evaluation for quotation is free for our potential customers.

If I cannot modify my original design, can you still produce the parts?

We will assess processing risk and inform you of cost and lead‑time impact before starting production.
