Surface Finishing Options for CNC‑Machined Custom Parts

Surface Finishing Options for CNC‑Machined Custom Parts

After CNC cutting, raw machined parts have tool marks and sharp edges. Suitable surface finishing improves corrosion resistance, wear performance, appearance and assembly performance. Many customers overlook finishing requirements at the inquiry stage, which leads to rework or extended delivery cycles. This article introduces common surface treatments for custom CNC parts for international buyers.

Main Surface Finishing for Metal CNC Parts

Anodizing (for aluminum)

Anodizing creates a hard protective oxide layer on aluminum. It improves wear and corrosion resistance and supports black, silver, blue and other color options. Hard anodizing is chosen for high‑wear working conditions.

Sandblasting

Sandblasting produces uniform matte texture, removes tool traces before anodizing or painting. Widely used for equipment housing and fixture parts.

Passivation (stainless steel)

Passivation removes free iron residue and enhances anti‑corrosion performance for stainless‑steel components, no obvious change on appearance.

Electroplating

Nickel‑plating, chrome‑plating are common options, improving hardness, wear resistance and decorative effect for brass and steel parts.

Polishing

From brushed finish to mirror polishing, for parts requiring smooth visual effect and low surface roughness.

Finishing Notes for Plastic CNC Parts

Plastic components can apply polishing, painting and UV coating. Some high‑performance plastics cannot do metal‑style anodizing. Please clarify plastic finishing requirements in your drawing notes.

How to Choose Suitable Finishing for Your Project

Consider three core factors: working environment (moisture, salt spray), functional requirement (wear, insulation), and visual appearance standard. If you are not sure which treatment fits your application, mark your usage scenario when sending drawings. Our engineers will give reasonable suggestions.

All surface finishing processes are completed with strict quality control. Inspection documents can be provided upon request before shipment.

Does anodizing change the dimension of aluminum CNC parts?

Thin anodizing layer will bring minor dimension change. We will reserve allowance during machining according to your requirements.

Can you combine sandblasting with anodizing for aluminum parts?

Yes, sandblasting before anodizing is a very common combined process.

What information should I provide for surface finishing quotation?

Specify treatment type, color and roughness requirement on drawings or inquiry message.
