CAD files for CNC machining are the foundation of every accurate quote and every good part. A machine shop turns your geometry into toolpaths, fixtures, and inspection plans. Everything downstream inherits the quality of what you send. A clean export can speed a quote by hours or days, while a broken one stalls the project before it starts. Buyers feel the difference most during quoting, where a good file package can shave a day off turnaround.

What Machine Shops Need From CAD Files for CNC Machining

For context, IGES predates STEP and describes surfaces rather than solids. Those surfaces can arrive with gaps, which forces programmers to knit them together before toolpathing. Use IGES only when the design exists nowhere else. Otherwise, prefer STEP.

Native formats often work fine too. SolidWorks .sldprt files, Fusion 360 archives, Inventor parts, and Creo files can open directly when versions align. Still, export a STEP alongside them. If the native file fails to open, the neutral copy keeps the project moving.

X_T (Parasolid) files deserve a mention as well. Many CAD packages build on the Parasolid kernel, so X_T transfers cleanly between them. Like STEP, it carries solids rather than surfaces.

Then there is the humble PDF. A 2D drawing in PDF carries what no 3D file can: tolerances, thread callouts, finish specs, critical dimensions, and notes. Most shops treat the drawing as the controlling document and the model as the shape reference. When the two conflict, the drawing governs, so keep them in sync.

Common Mistakes That Stall Quotes

Unfortunately, the same handful of errors shows up constantly in CAD files for CNC machining submissions. Avoiding them puts you ahead of most RFQs.

  • Missing thread information. Specifically, a modeled cosmetic thread means nothing without a callout like M6×1.0 on the drawing.
  • Unit mismatches. For example, models built in inches but read as millimeters come out 25.4 times the wrong size.
  • Corrupted exports. Bad translators, for instance, produce open bodies or stray surfaces, so always re-open your own STEP before sending it.
  • Model-drawing mismatch. An outdated revision pair invites the shop to quote the wrong geometry.
  • Missing material or quantity. Both drive stock choice, fixturing, and price breaks.

Similarly, assembly files cause confusion. Send the single part that gets machined, not the full weldment or subassembly.

Naming files clearly helps more than you might think. “Bracket_RevC_2024-03.step” beats “final_final_v2.stp” when someone needs the current design months later, and version discipline prevents costly mistakes on repeat orders.
